WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball dropped a home NEWMAC game to Springfield College, 57-33, Saturday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
Springfield (10-7 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC) junior Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 24 points to go with nine rebounds. Senior Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) also reached double digits with 12 points. Junior Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed eight points and seven rebounds.Â
Wellesley (6-10 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC) sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) led the team with 10 points. First-year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) added nine points and a couple of steals. Classmate Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) grabbed a team best six rebounds to go with five points.Â
The visitors began the game with an 11-0 run and led 15-5 after 10 minutes thanks to 7-of-9 shooting inside the arc.Â
The second quarter went back-and-forth but Springfield used a 5-1 spurt in the final minute to increase its advantage to 30-15 at the half. Leary had a game best 11 points for Springfield, while Chen led the Blue with four.Â
Wellesley came out of the break with a 6-0 run in the opening five minutes of the third to cut the deficit to 30-21. The Pride answered by scoring the next 10 points in a span of 3:24. Wellesley junior Arla Hofer (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored the final bucket of the frame to make the score 40-23 in favor of Springfield.Â
Springfield shot 50% in the fourth to outscore the Blue 17-10 en route to the 57-33 victory.  Â
The Blue will remain home to host Pride Night on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:00 PM versus MIT. The Pride will return to Springfield to welcome Smith College at the same time and date.
