DUDLEY, Mass. – First-year Nicola Murungi (Montclair, N.J.) tallied a first career goal for Wellesley College field hockey in a 2-0 victory against Nichols College at Vendetti Field on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Murungi gave the Blue (2-7) the lead late in the second period. Murungi gathered a quick rebound off of a flick from sophomore Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and fired in the goal, which proved to be a game-winner.
The visitors outshot the hosts, 12-1, in the opening 30 minutes.
Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) doubled the lead 57 seconds into the final quarter. Schmerhorn earned a second assist by taking a penalty corner and sending the ball right to Summers, who launched a powerful strike into the lower right corner of the cage. The goal was number three on the year for Summers and makes it a dozen in the career.
First-year Katelyn Hurt (Carrollton, Texas) picked up the win in the cage for Wellesley, keeping a clean sheet in the first half. Sophomore Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) kept the scoreless performance intact through the final horn. Junior Fallyn Belisle (Chester, Conn.) stopped seven of nine shots on goal for the Bison (2-9).
Wellesley finished the game with a 20-2 advantage in shots taken. The Blue attempted seven penalty corners, with the Summers goal being a result of the offensive pressure.
On Saturday, the Blue will come home to Butler Stadium to host Salve Regina in a 12:00 PM NEWMAC contest on Earn The W Day. That same day, the Bison head up to U. of New England for a 1:00 PM affair.
