WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball got back to .500 at 11-11 on the year with a straightforward 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-19) non-conference triumph over Westfield State University at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Senior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) put up 10 kills and 16 digs to add another double-double to the season. First-year Natalie Dabrowski (Chicago, Ill.) earned eight kills with a .353 hitting percentage in addition to a trio of blocks. Sophomore Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) was the game's assists leader (29) and junior Caroline Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) scooped up 10 digs.
Junior Lauren Carnes (Westfield, Mass.) totaled seven kills and three blocks for the Owls (14-10). Senior setter Morgan Dority (Walpole, Mass.) registered 14 assists with nine digs while libero Zurielys Rivera (Caguas, Puerto Rico) topped Westfield State with 12 digs.
After an early run made it 11-5 Wellesley in the first, the Blue took control, recording 10 of the final 12 points of the set. The hosts finished the opening frame with 12 kills and pinpoint accuracy with .583 hitting as a unit.
Wellesley ran out to a 7-2 lead in the second and never let it get back within three, sprinkling in a pair of four point runs in a 25-13 showing. First-years Cassie McMillan (San Mateo, Calif.) and Brianna Milliken (Newton, Mass.) each recorded kills late in the period.
The final set was the most competitive. Westfield State initially led 9-4 before Wellesley dug in and caught up by 12-12. The two teams hung close for the middle of the set before a key 5-1 stretch put the hosts up 21-16. Ultimately, a kill from K. Kunze-Hoeg and error sealed the three set match in the Blue's favor.
Up next, Wellesley will travel to NEWMAC rival Emerson College for a 7:00 PM game on Tuesday, November 4. Westfield State competes at Worcester State University on Saturday, November 8.
