Basketball Cruises to 75-41 Victory at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball cruised to a 75-41 victory at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday night at Tansey Gymnasium.

Sophomore Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) led five Wellesley (3-2) players in double figures with 14 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and three steals.  First-year Tanvi Agarwal (Woodinville, Wash.) and sophomore Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) each scored 13 points. Agarwal added five rebounds and five assists, while Chen had four steals. Sophomore Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand) tallied 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) rounded out the top scorers with 11 points. Barrow also registered seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

The Leopards (0-6) received 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals from sophomore Taylor Garabedian (Cheshire, Mass.). First-year Mia Luna Zayas (Ponce, Puerto Rico) also reached double figures with 12 points. 

The Blue scored the first three buckets, all via the layup, to take a 6-0 lead four minutes into the contest. Wentworth answered with a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game. The teams traded the next two baskets, but Wellesley used an 8-0 run, capped by three Shane layups, to take a 17-9 lead after 10 minutes. 

Early in the second, a Chen three-pointer put the Blue in front by 10 at 20-10. An Agarwal trey later pushed the advantage to 18 (29-11) with 4:06 left in the half. Wellesley took its largest lead of the half at 36-13 after a jumper by Techarungchaikul. Garabedian connected on a long ball for the Leopards with the last basket of the half to make the score 36-16 in favor of Wellesley. Agarwal recorded eight of the Blue's 19 points in the quarter. 

The third quarter was evenly played as the teams traded baskets throughout. Wentworth was able to cut the deficit to 16 after a Garabedian layup in the late stages of the frame, but Wellesley held a comfortable 51-34 lead heading into the fourth. 

The Blue added to their lead in the final frame by outscoring Wentworth 24-7. Six players had points for Wellesley as the team went 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the floor in the quarter.

Wellesley shot 51.7% for the game and held Wentworth to 33.3% shooting. 

Each team will host a game on Tuesday, December 2. The Blue welcome Elms College for a 7:00 PM tip-off while the Leopards will battle Suffolk University at 5:00 PM.
