No. 6 Field Hockey Defeated 3-1 in NEWMAC First Round by No. 3 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 6 seed Wellesley College field hockey fell 3-1 to No. 3 MIT in the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship Opening Round on Tuesday evening. MIT now plays at No. 2 seed WPI on Thursday, November 6 at 4:00 PM.

After a scoreless first half, junior Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) gathered the rebound off of a shot from classmate Jane Tortorella (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and found the back of the cage to get Tech on the scoreboard.

MIT added a second goal late in the third. Shortly after a penalty corner, senior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) took a pass from sophomore Drew Hussar (Dover, Mass.) and ripped in the goal.

Less than a minute later, the Blue countered with a goal of its own. Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) scored a 10th goal of the season, assisted by classmate Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas). 

The Engineers got its third and final goal just under four minutes into the fourth. Junior Audrey Oh (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied while Tortorella recorded a second assist.

Wellesley first-year Sebastian Limkakeng (Cary, N.C.) recorded a fourth defensive save of the year while sophomore goalie Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) made 12 saves.

MIT junior Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made seven stops.

MIT held a 23-10 shot advantage and attempted 14 penalty corners. Wellesley took three penalty corners.
