WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball picked up a 68-51 win over Elms College with four players in double figures at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Junior Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) was perfect from the floor, scoring 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting and 2-of-2 foul shooting for the Blue (4-4). Barrow added eight boards and four assists Sophomore Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) tacked on 16 points. Classmate Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) earned a 13 point, 11 rebound game. First-year Tanvi Agarwal (Woodinville, Wash.) hit a trio of deep balls and finished with 13 points.Â
The Blazers (2-8) saw 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting from sophomore Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.). Additionally, Turco pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.Â
The scoring was even early on, with Elms up 9-6 halftime through the first quarter. The Blue flipped the script from there, scoring the final 12 points of the opening period of the next 4:45. Agarwal scored five during the stretch while sophomores Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) and Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand) made baskets for the hosts.
The Blazers and the Blue traded pairs of free throws to begin the second. A 10-0 push put Wellesley up 30-11 with 6:22 left in the half. Sophomore Gabby Wasiewicz (Worcester, Mass.) hit three triples to keep Elms competitive. The Blazers brought it back to 10 by halftime, trailing 34-24.
After alternating buckets in the third, the Blue brought its edge up to 46-30 on a Barrow three-ball. After 30 minutes of action, Wellesley led 51-36.
The hosts outscored the visitors 17-15 in the final period, never letting the game get within 12.
Wellesley shot 26-for-60 (43.3%) and 10-of-12 (83.3%) while winning the rebound battle 42-30.
The Blue are back in action at the St. Petersburg Classic in Fla. on Monday, December 29 against Christopher Newport University. The Blazers host Wentworth Institute of Technology on December 30.
