Wellesley Basketball Faces 81-64 NEWMAC Setback at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) scored 22 points, including a 500th career point, in an 81-64 setback as Coast Guard Academy defeated Wellesley College basketball in a NEWMAC showdown at Roland Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Bears (14-5 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC) were led by 20 points and eight assists from junior Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.). Senior Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) tacked on 17 points with four made three pointers. Seniors Glory Bethen (Boothbay, Maine) and Kelly Hagerty (Emerald Isle, N.C.) both finished in double figures, with Hagerty pulling down 10 boards for a double-double.

In addition to the scoring, Barrow had nine rebounds and a trio of assists for the Blue (6-12 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC). First year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.  

The teams were knotted up at 6-6 halfway through the first quarter. A three ball from senior Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) put the Blue up 13-11 with 1:26 left in the opening frame. The quarter ended with a couple of Coast Guard buckets sandwiched around a Wellesley hoop for a 15-15 tie heading into the second. 

The home team utilized the long ball in the second to build a 46-33 advantage at the half. Coast Guard went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc in the quarter and finished the first 20 minutes 9-of-16 (56.3%) from deep. Stotts had 15 for the Bears, while Barrow led Wellesley with 10 in the half. 

Coast Guard narrowly outscored Wellesley 17-15 in the third quarter to take a 63-48 advantage after three frames. The Bears lead by as much as 19 at points. Barrow added eight points to the total for Wellesley.

The Blue cut the deficit to 11 at 68-57 with a Barrow layup but that was as close as it got. A 8-2 Coast Guard run put the game out of reach, with the Bears running its lead up late.

The Blue shot 25-for-56 (44.6%) and the Bears went 32-of-73 (43.8%) shooting. Coast Guard capitalized on 15 made shots from behind the arc. Wellesley connected on nine of its foul shots.

Each team returns to action at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 5. The Blue will host Earn The W day across crosstown rival Babson College. The Bears travel to No. 7/6 Smith College.
