Blue Basketball Faces 65-45 Setback at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – WPI sophomore Emmy Allyn (Rutland, Mass.) poured in 24 points in a 65-45 NEWMAC win over Wellesley College basketball on Wednesday night at Harrington Auditorium.

Allyn drilled six shots from behind the line for the Engineers (11-13 Overall, 4-6 NEWMAC) and also assisted on six baskets. Sophomore Ava Giansiracusa (Wethersfield, Conn.) added 16 points off of the bench.

First year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) had the high mark for the Blue (8-15 Overall, 3-7 NEWMAC) with 13 points and six rebounds. Classmate Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) put up 10 points while sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) finished with five assists and three steals.

Wellesley raced out to a 6-2 lead before WPI fired back with 10 of the next 12 points. The Blue trailed 17-13 after one stanza.

WPI's lead grew to 10 at 25-15 with 8:04 on the clock in the second quarter. Wellesley cut it to 26-20 with a three ball from senior Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) with four minutes remaining in the half. Neither team scored in the final four minutes before the break.

The Engineers' advantage hovered between six and 10 for much of third period, with the hosts outscoring the visitors 13-12 in the quarter.

The Blue cut the gap to seven, 41-34, at the 8:37 mark of the fourth. A 9-0 WPI stretch followed, putting the game out of reach for Wellesley, who never got back within 15 points.

WPI was bolstered by 11-of-28 (39.3%) shooting from three point range. The Engineers controlled the rebounds 33-22 and had 18 assists.

Both teams conclude the regular season on Saturday, February 22. The Blue host No. 9/10 Smith College at 1:00 PM while the Engineers tip-off at the same time at Wheaton College.
