WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse dropped its season opener to Worcester State University 18-5 at Butler Stadium on Saturday.
Senior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led Worcester State (1-0) with seven points on two goals and five assists. Senior Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, Mass.) led all players with four goals. Senior Abbie Wing (Griswold, Conn.) contributed three goals and an assist. Junior Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, Mass.) tallied two goals, an assist, eight draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.Â
Wellesley (0-1) junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) posted three goals. First-year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) notched a first collegiate tally. Senior Mila Rosenthal-Vincenti (Stony Brook, N.Y.) also found the scoring column. Senior Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) was credited with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.Â
The visitors scored a pair of goals in the opening three minutes, but the Blue answered with two scores in a 30-second span to knot the game at 2-2 midway through the first. The Lancers went on a 3-0 run to close the first and take a 5-2 lead.Â
Worcester State added to its lead with a goal less than one minute into the second but Tipton found the back of the net for Wellesley to keep the margin at three. The Lancers then began to pull away with eight unanswered goals to finish the half with a 14-3 advantage.Â
Each team scored once in the third, while Worcester State held a 3-1 edge on the scoreboard in the fourth to account for the 18-5 final. Â
The Blue will remain home on Wednesday, February 26 for a 4:00 PM game with Gordon College. The Lancers play at the same date and time at Simmons University.
