Blue Grabs 13-10 Win Over Gordon; Desrosiers' First with the Blue

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse earned a 13-10 non-conference victory over Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon at Butler Stadium. The win is the first for Corinne Desrosiers as the Wellesley Head Coach. 

Junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) led all players with eight points on five goals and three assists. Sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) was next with two goals and three assists for the Blue (1-1). Senior Ryan Boone (Scotch Plains, N.J) picked up a game best five ground balls. 

Senior Kaitlyn Mini (Malden, Mass.) led the Fighting Scots (0-2) with seven points on six goals and an assist. Senior Caroline Piorkowski (Millis, Mass.) added a goal and two assists. Senior Emma Darling (South Portland, Maine) chipped in with team highs of four ground balls and four caused turnovers. 

Wellesley got off to a great start and outscored Gordon 7-0 in the first quarter. The Blue received goals from five players with Tipton and McCabe each scoring twice. First-year Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) gave Wellesley a 6-0 lead with 42 seconds to play on a first collegiate tally. Eleven seconds later, Tipton added the team's seventh goal, which was Tipton's 100th career point. 

Tipton put the home team in front 8-0, early in the second, but then Gordon controlled the rest of the frame. The Fighting Scots scored seven of the next eight goals to cut the deficit to 9-7 heading into halftime. Mini scored five of the goals for Gordon. 

In a low scoring third quarter, Wellesley was able to double its lead. Tipton's fifth goal of the game gave the Blue a 10-7 lead midway through the quarter. Gordon answered 21 seconds later with a goal by junior Jocelyn Noyes (Byfield, Mass.). Wellesley finished strong in the final four minutes of the third with goals by sophomore Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) and Shell for the 12-8 lead. 

Wellesley opened the fourth with a goal by Kennison that was set up by Tipton. Gordon stayed close by scoring the next two goals to bring the Scots to within 13-10 with less than seven minutes to play. Neither side would add to their totals for the remainder of the contest resulting in the Wellesley victory. 

Junior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) earned the win in net with seven goals allowed and two saves in nearly 30 minutes of action. First-year Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) worked the final 30 minutes and allowed three goals with a couple of saves. Senior Kayla Davidson (Dracut, Mass.) finished with 11 saves for Gordon. 

Wellesley remains at home on Saturday, March 1 at 12:00 PM against Husson University. Gordon returns to the Brigham Athletic Complex to welcome Maine Maritime Academy at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 4.
