Game 1 | Wellesley 19, Bates 7 | Final (5 Inn.)
18 hits and home runs from sophomores Rodriguez and Diana Borrison (San Jose, Calif.) powered Wellesley to a five inning win over Bates.
Sophomore Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) led off the top of the first with a hard shot off of the pitcher's glove, before stealing second. Rodriguez ripped a shot over the left field fence to drive in a pair of runs. The homer marks the second of Rodriguez's career.
Bates (5-3) got two runs right back in the bottom half of the opening frame. A single by sophomore Zariya Anderson (Wayzata, Minn.) and a fielding error in left allowed junior Ella Maher (Newton, Mass.) to score all the way from first. Anderson later crossed the plate on a single to right center from sophomore Isabel Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.).
The Blue bats produced six runs in the top of the second to put Wellesley up 8-2. Borrison reached on an error before advancing on a bunt single by senior Charis Chung (San Gabriel, Calif.).Â
Junior Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) singled up the middle bringing in Borrison. Mulhern brought home Chung with a single before crossing alongside Delgado on a one-bagger up the middle from Rodriguez. Sophomore Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating Rodriguez. First year Ruijia Yang (Berwyn, Pa.) was the final run of the inning, reaching home on a hit up the middle from classmate Brynne Mellady (Ellicott City, Md.).
Wellesley tacked on four more in the top half of the third inning. Pinch runner Natalie Nicol (Latexo, Texas) made it 9-2, scoring when Delgado placed a single between second and short. Yang made it 11-2, bringing two across on a deep triple to left center. Yang's run made it 12-2 on a double to left from junior Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.).
Bates cut into its deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third. Two runners came home when Anderson launched a double to the base of the left field fence. The Blue quickly got the two runs back in the fourth when Borrison blasted a two run long ball over the left field fence, making it 14-4.
