Clark Narrowly Brushes By Blue Lacrosse, 14-12; Tipton Scores 100th Career Goal

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) reached 100 career goals in Saturday's 14-12 NEWMAC loss to Clark University at Butler Stadium.

Tipton, needing two goals to reach the career milestone, notched a goal late in the first and then the 100th at 8:08 in the third quarter. Tipton added an assist and seven draw controls for the Blue (1-6, 0-2 NEWMAC). Sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) led Wellesley with four points on three goals and an assist and added five draws. First-year Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) registered two goals and an assist. 

The Cougars (3-5, 1-1 NEWMAC) received six points on five goals and an assist from senior Aubrey Conners (Devon, Pa.). Senior Erin Lucas (Ludlow, Mass.) tallied four goals, an assist, three draw controls and two ground balls. Senior Meghan Fogarty (Melrose, Mass.) added two goals and two assists. 

In a back-and-forth first quarter the Blue came away with a 5-4 advantage after 15 minutes. The Blue received goals from five players, while Conners scored three times for Clark. 

Sophomore Sofia Pietrus (Raleigh, N.C.) scored less than a minute into the second to give Wellesley a two-goal advantage. Clark tied the game with two goals in the next three minutes. The Blue responded by scoring the next two from first-year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine). Clark senior Erin Lucas (Ludlow, Mass.) found the back of the net with the final goal of the half to make the score 8-7 in favor of Wellesley. 

McCabe and Tipton scored in a less than a minute span, midway through the third, to give Wellesley its biggest lead of the game, 10-7. Lucas and Conners then scored in the final four minutes of the frame to pull Clark to within one again at 10-9. 

The Cougars carried the momentum into the fourth by scoring the first four goals of the stanza for a 6-0 run to take their largest lead at 13-10. Petersen-Kopman answered 26 seconds later for the Blue and was followed by a McCabe goal 35 seconds after to pull the Blue within a goal with five minutes to play. First-year Sydney McMonagle (Trappe, Tenn.) tacked on an insurance goal with 1:37 on the clock to help Clark seal the 14-12 victory. 

First-year Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) played 31 minutes, allowed six goals and made nine saves for Wellesley. Junior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) allowed eight goals and made four saves. 

Clark senior goalie Annie Battle (Bozeman, Mont.) earned the win with 12 goals allowed and seven saves. 

Next up, the Blue will host MIT on Saturday, March 29 at 1:00 PM while Clark travels to MIT for a 5:00 PM matchup on Wednesday, March 26.
