WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT scored 11 first quarter goals and notched a 23-5 NEWMAC win over Wellesley College lacrosse on Saturday at Butler Stadium.
The Engineers (4-5 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC) were led by a 10-point (five goals, five assists) performance from junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.). Senior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) registered four goals with three assists while junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) had five points (three goals, two assists). Sophomore keeper Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) made four saves in the first half for MIT. Junior goalie Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) had three in the second half. Junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) won nine draw controls.
Junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) and senior Mattie Knowles (Newburyport, Mass.) both scored twice for the Blue (1-7 Overall, 0-3 NEWMAC). Senior Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) caused three turnovers and scooped two ground balls. Wellesley goalie first-year Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) earned five saves, while classmate Elaina Brookhart (Mystic, Conn.) stopped a shot.
The Engineers got on the scoreboard exactly three minutes into the game when J. Flusche scored off a pass from Petulla. Over the remainder of the first quarter, MIT tacked on 10 more goals. Petulla scored thrice, senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Thomas both had two goals while J. Flusche, sophomore Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) and first-year Alexis Reinard (Nottingham, Pa.) each found the back of the net. Wellesley found a tally courtesy of Tipton.
MIT added three more goals in the second quarter. J. Flusche struck twice and G. Flusche added one for the visitors. The Blue picked up a tally from Knowles to make it 14-2 at the end of the half.
In the third quarter, the Engineers poured in five, with Thomas totaling two goals and Reinard, first-year Cecilia McCarthy (New York, N.Y) and sophomore Ava Malysa (Manhasset, N.Y.) each recording one.
Wellesley fired in a trio of goals in the early stages of the fourth. First-year Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Knowles and Tipton dealt the blows for the Blue. MIT hit the 20-goal mark with 7:18 left on a shot from Malysa. Thomas and sophomore Maeve McGinnis (Brunswick, Ohio) scored the final goals of the game for MIT
Both teams compete in NEWMAC contests on Wednesday, April 2. The Blue travel to Wheaton College for a 7:00 PM showdown while the Engineers welcome Emerson College at 6:00 PM.
