Blue Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season in Fourth at Tufts Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field commenced the outdoor season on Saturday by placing fourth at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. The event featured student-athletes from 28 different institutions.

Host Tufts University won the team competition with 237 points. Suffolk University was second with 60.83 and U. of New England rounded out the podium with 56.5. The Blue were just behind with 55, ahead of fellow NEWMAC competitors Smith College (44), Emerson College (8) and Mount Holyoke College (8).

Senior Merete Ogah (Austin, Texas) set a personal-best time of 12.82 in the 100m, earning silver amongst 43 entrants. Ogah's time currently ranks No. 68 in Division III.

Senior Charlie Barron (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and junior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) went 2-4 out of 22 in the 400m dash. Barron grabbed second, clocking in at 1:03.67. Klingensmith's time of 1:04.27 was good for fourth.

Senior Aoife Fitzgerald (Paxton, Mass.) was the 400m Hurdles runner-up, starting the season with a 1:12.07 showing.

Junior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.) and first year Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) earned 4-5 in the Discus Throw. Francis threw for 31.11m while Sharar's distance marked at 29.88m. In the Hammer Throw, Francis nabbed 17th, throwing 30.69m. Sharar was just behind in 19th with a distance of 30.07m.

In the Long Jump, senior Erin Dickinson (Papillion, Neb.) and first year Abigail Choi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tied for fifth in a field of 25. Dickinson and Choi each leapt a distance of 4.89m. Dickinson later scored second in the Triple Jump, reaching 10.52m.

Junior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) opened the season with a PR in the 1500m, breaking the five-minute mark at 4:59.47 to claim seventh out of 56 competitors and pick up two points. First year Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.) came in 31st with a time of 5:36.84.

Junior Simone Beauchamp (Aurora, Colo.) was the Blue's top finisher in the 5000m, taking ninth with a time of 18:41.51. Senior Alicia Naranjo-Champion (El Monte, Calif.) was 14th with a 19:30.84, sophomore Maggie Yan (Montvale, N.J.) finished 21st at 21:10.56 and classmate Perry Huang Kemper's (Boise, Idaho) collected 23rd at 22:07.73.

First year Julia Carmona's (Bronx, N.Y.) Javelin Throw debut resulted in a distance of 24.67m and a 16th place finish.

First year Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) came in 18th in the 800m race, coming in at 2:35.20.

Up next, the Blue will travel to New London, Conn. for the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday, April 5.
