Wellesley Lacrosse Drops NEWMAC Contest at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College scored 10 opening period goals in an 18-5 NEWMAC performance against Wellesley College lacrosse at Diane Nordin '80 Athletic Field on Wednesday night.

Junior Sara Spielman (Norwalk, Conn.), sophomore Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) and first year Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, Maine) all supplied three goals for the Lyons (7-3 Overall, 4-0 NEWMAC). Seniors Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) and Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) both had two goals and two assists. First year Averie Walton (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped three shots in the first half. Sophomore Jenna Langan (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Katie Geis (Duxbury, Mass.) combined for three saves in the second half.

The Blue (1-8 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC) were led by a pair of goals from Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) and a score and an assist by sophomore Amelia Dupont (New York, N.Y.). Sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) scored and won five draw controls. Junior goalie Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) made three saves while first year Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) had five stops.

Wheaton's offense surged throughout the opening 15 minutes, finding the back of the net 10 times. Smart connected on three goals while teammates Spielman and Qua both scored twice.

The Lyons added three goals in the second to up its lead to 13-0 by halftime. Parsons delivered a pair of points while Qua hit a hat-trick for the game.

Wellesley put itself on the scoreboard four minutes into the second half Tipton ran in and put away a shot. Parsons made a shot for host Wheaton before Tipton added a second score for the Blue. Late in the quarter, Wheaton's Annemieke Buterbaugh (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Blue sophomores Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) and Dupont all put in a goal for their respective teams. 

The hosts added three goals, while the visitors notched a goal in the final period. Senior Megan Cuddy (Natick, Mass.), sophomore Katie Prinn (Manchester, Mass.) and Spielman each tallied for Wheaton. McCabe did the damage for Wellesley.

Both teams play NEWMAC games on the road on Saturday, April 5. The Blue are at Emerson College at 7:00 PM. The Lyons head over to Springfield College for a 1:00 PM start time.
