Blue Lacrosse Tripped Up by Springfield on Senior Day; Sharma Records 100th Caused Turnover

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse was defeated by Springfield College 19-5 in a NEWMAC contest at Butler Stadium on Saturday. During the game, Blue senior Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) became the second student-athlete in program history to record 100 caused turnovers.

Prior to the game Wellesley acknowledged six seniors for their contributions to the Blue. The seniors honored were Ryan Boone (Scotch Plains, N.J.), Sharma, Mila Rosenthal-Vincenti (Stony Brook, N.Y.), Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.), Mattie Knowles (Newburyport, Mass.) and Cianna Salvatora (Pittsburgh, Penn.).

Springfield (12-1 Overall, 7-0 NEWMAC) opened the scoring 30 seconds into the game when junior Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) converted a penalty corner. The Pride eventually took a 7-0 lead late in the first before Wellesley (1-11 Overall, 0-7 NEWMAC) got on the board with a tally from sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.). Springfield answered with less than 40 seconds to go for an 8-1 advantage after a quarter.

The visitors added five goals in the second to take a 13-1 lead into half time.

Junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) began the second half with a goal for Wellesley. Less than two minutes later, Tipton set up first-year teammate Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) with a scoring opportunity to cut the deficit to 13-3. Johnson stopped the rally for the Pride with a fourth goal of the game. Tipton notched another goal for the Blue to make the difference 14-4 after three frames.

Springfield added a pair of goals in the early stages of the fourth before Wellesley first-year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) registered a goal for the Blue. The Pride tacked on three more goals down the stretch for the 18-5 final.

Each team will next play on Wednesday, April 16. The Blue will host its Morgan's Message game with Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 PM. The Pride take on MIT on the road at 6:00 PM.
