SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse was edged by Mount Holyoke College, 12-11, in a NEWMAC road game Saturday afternoon.
Junior Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) opened the scoring for the home team, but Wellesley responded with goals from sophomore Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) and first-year Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio). The teams then traded the next three goals to make the score 3-3. Wellesley ended the quarter with a pair of player down goals by first-year Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) for a 5-3 lead.
In the second, the teams alternated four goals to each score twice and keep the Wellesley lead at a pair, 7-5, at the half. McCabe and Kennison were the Blue goal scorers.
The Blue began the third frame with a 3-1 run in the first three minutes of action to take a 10-6 advantage. Mount Holyoke (4-11 Overall, 2-7 NEWMAC) rallied to score three unanswered goals in the final six minutes to cut the deficit to 10-9 heading into the final quarter.
A goal by Petersen-Kopman in the opening minute of the fourth put Wellesley on top 11-9. The Lyons fought back again with a goal by senior Madison Millyan (Winchester, Mass.) at 10:27 before Bisson notched the game-tying goal 39 seconds later.
Mount Holyoke completed the comeback when junior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net on a player down unassisted tally for the eventual game-winner with 3:25 left to play.
Bisson led all scorers with six points on four goals and two assists for the Lyons. Junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) contributed a game best seven ground balls to go with four caused turnovers.
McCabe finished the game with four goals, an assist, four ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls for the Blue. Petersen-Kopman registered three goals and an assist. Senior Mila Rosenthal-Vincenti (Stony Brook, N.Y.) posted six draw controls.
Both teams will conclude the regular season on Wednesday, April 23. Wellesley (1-13 Overall, 0-9 NEWMAC) takes on Babson College at home at 7:00 PM while Mount Holyoke plays at Springfield College at 6:00 PM.
