BOSTON, Mass. – Emerson College sophomore Ava DelliCompagni (Coatesville, Pa.) registered 11 points (six goals, five assists) to defeat Wellesley College lacrosse, 26-19 in a NEWMAC matchup at Rotch Field on Saturday night.
In addition to DelliCompagni, first year Laina Gustafson (Cross Plains, Wis.) had eight points (five goals, four assists) and a game-best 11 draw controls for the Lions (5-6 Overall, 1-5 NEWMAC). First year Laura Lovell (Norwalk, Conn.) had four goals while senior Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) added three goals and four assists. Senior Ava Selby (Boonsboro, Md.) caused two turnovers and grabbed five ground balls. Junior goalie Ellie Spotts (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) stopped 11 shots in net.
Junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) was a big contributor for the Blue (1-9 Overall, 0-5 NEWMAC), supplying the team with 11 points (six goals, five assists) and nine draw controls. First year Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) contributed five goals while sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) recorded a hat-trick. Sophomore Sofia Pietrus (Raleigh, N.C.) snatched up four ground balls. First year goalie Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) saved 12 shots with six ground balls for Wellesley.
After nearly five scoreless opening minutes, Gustafson and Tipton traded goals for their respective teams. Wellesley took a 2-1 lead two minutes later when McCabe took a pass from Pietrus and put it away. DelliCompagni retaliated quickly to knot it up at 2-2.Â
Blue senior Mattie Knowles (Newburyport, Mass.) and Gustafson went shot for shot again as the game hit 3-3 10 minutes into play. DelliCompagni scored the final late goal of the quarter to put the Lions up 4-3 after one stanza.
Emerson went on a 5-0 run early in the second. First year Stella Huberie (Canandiagua, N.Y.) scored twice while sophomore Holland Rutter (Pingree Grove, Ill.), Krosin and Lovell all added a tally.Â
The hosts outscored the visitors 4-3 in the remainder of the second quarter, putting Emerson up 13-6 at halftime. Tipton, McCabe and Petersen-Kopman all connected on shots for Wellesley.
The Lions started the second half with goals from Krosin and Lovell to go up nine at 15-6. But the Blue would not go quietly into the night, staging a 5-0 run to get back within striking distance. Sophomore Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) opened the offensive assault, while McCabe, Petersen-Kopman, first year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) and Tipton all chipped in.Â
Tipton, Woodard and Petersen-Kopman struck for the visitors late in the third while DelliCompagni, Huberlie, Rutter and Kosin answered back for Emerson. After 45 minutes, the hosts led 19-14.
Emerson tacked on three more goals to grow its margin to eight with just under 10 minutes left. Petersen-Kopman and first year Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) both fired in goals for the Blue
Wellesley wraps up its three-game road trip on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:00 PM at Smith College. Emerson plays at Clark University on that same date and time.
