Smith Gets By Blue Lacrosse, 21-9

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith College led early and never looked back in a 21-9 home NEWMAC win against  Wellesley College lacrosse on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kyra Hawk (San Jose, Calif.) contributed eight points (six goals, two assists) for the Pioneers (8-6 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC). Junior Caroline Sanders (Orange County, Calif.) and first year Layna Fitzgerald (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for nine additional goals while senior Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) assisted on five goals. Junior keeper Brooke Testa (Pittstown, N.J.) stopped five shots while senior Paige Rocha (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, N.J.) both made two saves.

The Blue (1-10 Overall, 0-6 NEWMAC) were led by a six-goal effort by junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas). First year Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) added two goals. Senior Mila Rosenthal-Vincenti (Stony Brook, N.Y.) earned two assists with nine draw controls. Senior Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) caused five turnovers. First year Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) earned a trio of saves in 29 minutes of action.

Smith raced out a 9-2 lead after one period. Hawk scored a trio of goals while Fitzgerald added a pair. First year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) and Tipton each scored for the Blue while Rosenthal-Vincenti assisted on both goals.

The Pioneers added six more second quarters goals while the Blue put in a pair to make it 15-4 at halftime. Sanders had a hat-trick for the hosts. Tipton and Shell both connected on shots for Wellesley.

The hosts outscored the visitors 4-3 in third, setting the score at 19-7 after three quarters. Sanders and Hawk found the back of the net for the Pioneers. Tipton tallied twice and Shell recorded a second goal of the game for Wellesley.

Each team registered two goals in the final stanza. Tipton found goals number five and six of the game in the final 15 minutes.

Wellesley will return home and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM versus Springfield College. Smith plays at Wheaton College at the same date and time.
