WELLESLEY, Mass. -- No. 12 Wellesley College tennis produced a 5-2 non-conference win versus No. 20 New York University at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Sunday. The Blue (13-1) have won nine in a row, while Violets fall to 6-5 this season.
No. 3 doubles was the first to finish for the Blue. Sophomore Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) and first year Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) got an early break and never looked back in a 6-2 performance against senior Hannah Chang (Houston, Texas) and first year Norah Staunton (Goshen, N.Y.).
The Blue locked up the doubles point by earning a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. First years Kotistha Modak (Chennai, India) and Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) raced out to a 4-0 lead that propelled the duo over graduate student Isabella Hartman (New York, N.Y.) and first year Siona Vallabhaneni (Paradise Valley, Ariz.)
Junior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) held on to win 7-5 over senior Jimena Menendez (Miami, Fla.) and first year Emma Kast (Hong Kong) at No. 2 doubles. After leading 5-2, the Violets won three straight before Wellesley rebounded with the final two games.
Corte-Real doubled Wellesley's lead at No. 3 singles, picking apart junior Aditi Narayan (Bangalore, India) in a 6-1, 6-1 match.
The Violets scored its first point of the day at No. 2 singles. No. 36 ranked Hartman beat Xu, 6-4, 6-4, making use of late breaks in both sets.
No. 7 Menendez and Modak battled it out for three grueling sets at the top line. Menendez picked up a 6-4 opener before Modak regained footing in a 6-1 second set to force a decider. Menendez kicked into high gear in a 6-2 third to knot the match up at 2-2.
First year Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) put the Blue back ahead with 3-2 a sharp 6-2, 6-1 display over Vallabhaneni. Patel improves to 14-1 on the year in singles.
At No. 6 singles, sophomore Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) clinched the match for the Blue, putting together a gritty 7-5, 6-4 win to brush past Kast.
In the final match of the day, Buttorff and Staunton were neck and neck at No. 4. Buttorff gave the Blue the first set, taking a 7-6(2) tiebreaker to snag the lead. Staunton countered with a 6-2 second. Buttorff ultimately came through in a 7-5 decider to give Wellesley its fifth and final point.
The Blue will return to competition at MIT on Saturday, April 12 at 12:00 PM. The Violets return home to host University of Rochester at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 13.
