WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis took eight out of nine singles matches and one doubles win during the second day of the Wellesley Invitational at the Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts on Saturday.
The morning featured Wellesley taking on Trinity (Conn.) College in singles while the early afternoon saw Coach Brian Kuscher's squad face off with NEWMAC foe Babson College in doubles.
Sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) was nearly flawless, dropping only a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 showdown with first-year Emilia Romano.Â
Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) was also one game shy of perfection, taking down sophomore Madison Damond (San Francisco, Calif.) 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) was precise in a 6-3, 6-2 dispatching of senior Elise Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.).
Classmate Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) picked up momentum late in the first set and never looked back, closing out a 6-4, 6-1 match against senior Allie Francis (Westport, Conn.)
Sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) added to the win column with a 6-1, 6-4 performance versus sophomore Kendall Cedar (Houston, Texas).
First-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) made quick of Jahnavi Vaghasia, 6-1, 6-1.
Classmate Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) matched the 6-1, 6-1 final over Emma Bazemore.
Junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) went the distance with Cedar and came out on top. After Khera collected a 6-4 opener, Cedar struck back 6-1 in the second set to force a tiebreaker It was the Wellesley junior who rebounded with a 10-5 tiebreaker to take the match.
Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) took on Babson's Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.). After dropping a tightly contested first set 7-6(3), Sarav stormed back into the match, losing a single game in a dominant 6-1 second. Starcher fought hard to take a 10-7 tiebreaker finale.
In doubles, junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) and Mariotti fell 6-1 to Babson.
The duos of Sarav/Bian and Pak/Buttorff each dropped 6-2 matches.
Khera andHayes went to war with Babson, narrowly falling 7-6(4) despite their best efforts.
Patel and Corte-Real recorded the lone doubles point for the Blue. The pair scored a 7-5 win in their first match as a pair.
The Wellesley Invitational will continue tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 AM.
