WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis completed its final day of the Wellesley Invitational at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The team took on Babson College in singles in the morning before squaring off with Brandeis University in doubles.
First-year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) claimed a 6-4, 7-6(5) straight set victory over junior Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates).
Sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) made a statement with a three set win. After taking the opener 6-3, Corte-Real dropped the second by the same score to Babson first-year Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine). A third set tiebreaker went back and forth, with Corte-Real coming out on top, 10-8.
Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) also defeated Babson. After losing the first set 4-6, Pak surged in the second, taking it 6-3. The finale went Pak's way, 10-5.
Sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) nearly collected a win, narrowly slipping 4-6, 7-6(3), 1-0 (3) in a three-set battle. Junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) fought hard in a 7-5, 6-3 match that went in Babson's favor.
Junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) had some success in the second set of a 6-1, 7-5 loss to the Beavers. Classmate Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) had moments in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) was competitive in a 6-4, 6-3 contest taken by the Beavers.
First-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) fell 6-1, 6-1 in singles. Sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) picked up a couple games in a 6-2, 6-0 setback.
Buttorff and Bian turned their fortunes around in doubles, dominating junior Sunjana Kumar (Phoenix, Ariz.) and   6-1.
Corte-Real and Khera teamed up to collect a 6-2 win over Brandeis' pairing of Kumar and first-year Galia Harmelin (Seattle, Wash.).
Pak and Mariotti were also successful in doubles, coming up with a 7-5 decision versus junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India) and first-year Avani Chitale (Ahmedabad, India).
Bian and Xu fell 6-3 to the Judges in doubles. Sarav and Patel were blanked 6-0.
Next up, the Blue will host NEWMAC foe Emerson College at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 20.
