BRUNSWICK, MAINE – Wellesley College field hockey fell 3-0 to No.17 Bowdoin College on Wednesday night. A trio of first quarter scores helped the Polar Bears stay undefeated at 5-0 in 2025.
First-year Katelyn Hurt (Carrollton, Texas) earned a trio of saves in 30 minutes of action for the Blue (1-4). Sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) didn't allow a goal in the second half and stopped five shots.
Senior Lauren O'Donald (West Springfield, Mass.) made a stop and collected the win in the cage for Bowdoin. Sophomore Eva Filipponi (Wilton, Conn.) kept a clean sheet in the latter half of the game.
The Polar Bears struck first when junior Emily Ferguson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a 16th career goal roughly five and a half minutes into the game.
Forty seconds later, Bowdoin added a second score, courtesy of sophomore Hannah Balmelli (Lake Forest, Ill.) off of a pass from junior Clara Noyes (Lexington, Mass.). Ferguson tacked on a third goal before the first period ended.
The final 45 minutes saw both defenses settle in and deny any scoring opportunities. The hosts ended the affair with an 18-1 lead in the shots taken and attempted seven penalty corners. Wellesley took a pair of penalty corners.
Next up, Wellesley will return home to host Babson College in its NEWMAC opener at 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 20. Bowdoin is off for six days before hosting NESCAC rival Bates College on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00 PM.
