MEDFORD, Mass. – No. 2 Tufts University defeated Wellesley College field hockey 3-0 on Tuesday night at Ounjian Field. Wellesley sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned a career-best 16 saves in the setback.
The Jumbos (1-0) held a 36-0 shot advantage over the Blue (0-2). The visitors defense held strong against high-level competition.
Wellesley faced 17 shots in the first half but was unfazed, taking a 0-0 scoreline into the half. Nearly six minutes into the third quarter, Tufts finally broke the stalemate with a goal from junior Lilly Ragusa (Newburyport, Mass.), assisted by first-year Eleanor Helm (Loudonville, N.Y.).
52 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Jumbos doubled the lead with junior Claire Casey (Charlotte, N.C.) converting on a penalty corner.
Helm tacked on a third tally with four minutes remaining in the contest. Senior Lydia Eastburn (New Hope, Pa.) recorded a clean sheet in the cage for the hosts.
The Blue return to Butler Stadium on Tuesday, September for a 6:00 PM start versus Connecticut College. The Jumbos are back at Ounjian Field on Saturday, September 6 against NESCAC foe Williams College at 1:00 PM.
