WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis swept Emerson College, 7-0, in its NEWMAC and dual-match Opener at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts on Saturday. The Blue are now 1-0 on the year while the Lions sit at 0-1.
Wellesley won the doubles point in convincing fashion. Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) got the Blue going with a 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles against senior Jayden Beverly (Dupont, Wash.) and sophomore Alisa Pimenova (Kyiv, Ukraine).
At No. 3 doubles, Blue junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) only dropped a single game in a 6-1 showing with senior Carlson Jones (Cleveland, Ohio) and junior Gianna Di-Reumante (McLean, Va.).
Junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) and sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) closed out the doubles' sweep by winning all six games over first-years Teah Login (Huntington, N.Y.) and Anna Matsuura (Okinawa, Japan).
Pak and Mariotti collected clean 6-0, 6-0 points at No. 5 and 6 singles over Beverly and Di-Reumante.
Sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) was perfect at No. 2 singles, winning 12 straight games in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over junior Amaya Briones (Mexico City, Mexico) to clinch the match for Wellesley.
At No. 3, Patel faced off with Pimenova and was up 6-1, 5-2 when Emerson's athlete had to retire.
Sophomore Sophie Buttorff followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-0 dispatching over Matsuura at No. 4 singles.
The top singles match went the longest, with Xu staying composed in a 6-4, 6-2 showcase with Login.
Next up, the Blue will compete in the Thoroughbred Invitational at Skidmore College from October 17-19. The Lions play UMaine Augusta later today at Regis College.
