E. Kunze-Hoeg's Triple-Double Guides Volleyball to 3-1 Win at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Wellesley College volleyball dug deep to win a tightly contested 3-1 (32-30, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17) match at Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) earned a second career triple-double for the Blue (5-4). E. Kunze-Hoeg stuffed the stat sheet with 10 kills, 28 assists and 19 digs, and threw in three blocks and two aces for good measure. The team also saw 12 kills from senior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) and junior Evie Hill (Rocklin, Calif.). Hill ended the game with 14 digs, good for a double-double. Sophomore Logan Wilson (Woodside, Calif.) added 11 kills while junior Noelle Winn (San Francisco, Calif.) notched 18 assists and 12 digs.

The Hawks (3-8) were paced by 16 digs from junior Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.). Senior Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) assisted on 15 kills and sophomore Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) had eight total blocks.

Wellesley opened the initial set with an 11-5 lead but the hosts settled in. Down 15-10, Roger Williams launched a key 5-0 run to knot the set up. From there the score would exchange hands back and forth, until the Hawks led 24-22. The Blue saved two set points on the back of kills from K. Kunze-Hoeg and Wilson. From there, both teams fought with everything they had, unable to wrestle the set away from its rival. Finally, down 30-29, Wellesley found its moment. E. Kunze-Hoeg put up a kill, then junior Caroline Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) had an ace and finally E. Kunze-Hoeg put the set to bed with another kill.

The second set was again even throughout. The Hawks capitalized on a 4-0 stretch to go up 17-12. Wellesley couldn't get back within three in the set, ultimately falling 25-21.

The third set started with alternating four point swings, first from Wellesley then Roger Williams. Once both teams settled in it became another war of attrition, with the score knotted at 12-12, 13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17. It would be a late push from the Blue winning six out of seven to go up 24-18 that proved the difference. The run featured multiple kills from Wilson, who tacked on a final kill to finish off the set.

Wellesley ran away with the fourth, compiling 15 kills as a team. Despite trailing 7-6 early, the visitors poured on the pressure, going up 13-8. Another 7-1 barrage put the contest out of reach and a kill from Hill put a bow on top of a 25-17 stanza.

Wellesley is back in action at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse in a NEWMAC contest with Springfield College on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00 PM. Roger Williams plays at Curry College at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 24.
