NEW LONDON, Conn. – Wellesley College soccer won its NEWMAC opener, 2-0, over Coast Guard Academy on Saturday at Nelson W. Nitchman Field. Junior Mae Nephew (Duluth, Minn.) and first-year Elena Garcia (Atlanta, Ga.) handled the scoring for the Blue (4-2-1 Overall, 1-0-0 NEWMAC).
Saturday marked the first NEWMAC win for first year coach Greg Margolis.
A corner kick in the 34th minute resulted in a loose ball just outside of the box. Nephew collected the loose ball and lobbed it over a group of defenders. The ball bounced off the ground and over the outstretched hands of junior Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.)
Wellesley upped its lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute. A foul in the box led to a penalty kick, taken by Garcia. The first-year lined up and put the ball away in the lower right corner.
Senior goalkeeper Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) registered a second shutout in 10 days, stopping eight shots over 90 minutes in goal.
The Bears (1-5-2 Overall, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) outshot the Blue 14-5 but were unable to convert any offensive chances.
The Blue will wrap up a three game road swing with a 6:00 PM kickoff at University of Hartford on Wednesday, September 24. The Bears will welcome Babson College on Saturday, September 27 at 1:00 PM.
