WESTON, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball scored a decisive 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) win over Regis College at Higgins Court on Wednesday night. The Blue (2-1) snapped a four-match series losing streak to Regis.
Sophomore Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills, 31 assists and eight digs with a .727 hitting percentage. Senior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) tacked on eight kills of her own with 10 digs. Junior Caroline Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a match-high 11 kills and classmate Noelle Winn (San Francisco, Calif.) led all student-athletes with 13 digs.
The Pride (1-3) were led by 13 assists from sophomore Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.). First-year Beatriz Paulo (Newton, Mass.) added on six kills.
Wellesley opened the match with a 4-1 run, with two kills by Meyer, and cruised to a 25-14 first set victory. Regis pulled within three at 9-6, but the Blue pulled away with an efficient attack at the net. The Blue finished the first set with 15 kills and a .560 hitting percentage. Meyer and E. Kunze-Hoeg each had four kills to lead Wellesley.
The second set played out evenly through the opening 11 points, with Regis up 6-5. The hosts then went on a 4-0 streak to go up 10-5. Wellesley blitzed back, racing to tie the set up at 14-14 before snatching 11 of the final 15 points. The Blue recorded 13 kills in the set.
Neither team held a lead of more than two points at the 16-16 mark of the third set. A key 5-0 run punctuated by multiple kills from sophomore Logan Wilson (Woodside, Calif.) gave the Blue breathing room at 21-17. Wilson dealt the final blow with a kill to close out a 25-20 set and secure the win for the visitors.
The Blue remain on the road with a trip to Rivier University for a 7:00 contest on Tuesday, September 9. The Pride continue to defend home court on Saturday, September at 10:00 AM against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
