WELLESLEY, Mass. – Emerson College snapped Wellesley College basketball's three-game win streak with a 54-42 NEWMAC win on Wednesday night at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. The Lions now sit at 11-5 Overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Blue fell to 7-8 Overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC contests.
Sophomore Lindsay Gould (Westlake Village, Calif.) led Emerson with 14 points, including four made threes. Senior guard Bri Frongillo (Hopedale, Mass.) racked up seven assists while junior Claire English (Winchester, Mass.) came down with 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) recorded a game-high 16 points and helped the Blue with eight boards and four steals. Junior Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) aided the team with eight assists, four steals and seven points.Â
The first quarter was a back-and-forth defensive affair, with the visitors up 7-5 after 10 minutes.Â
Emerson's triples started falling in the second quarter while Wellesley began attacking the inside. The Lions went up 13-5 less than a minute into the second. The lead fluctuated between five and eight for much of the period until the Blue cut it four at 22-18 on a jumper in the paint from Shane. A pair of traded buckets gave Emerson a 24-20 edge as the teams went to the locker rooms at the end of the half.
The Lions opened the third quarter with six straight points to make it 30-20 at the 7:12 mark. Wellesley responded with seven points of its own, punctuated by a layup from Shane. After three quarters of action, the visitors were up 32-27.
Emerson's offense was on full display in the fourth, with the team registering the first eight points of the frame to go up 40-27. The Blue got it back to eight at 40-32 with just over six minutes left. However, another 8-0 barrage from the Lions put the game out of reach.Â
Emerson ended the game going 11-for-26 (42.3%) from behind the arc. The Blue utilized 26 points in the paint to remain competitive throughout.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, January 24. Wellesley hosts Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 PM. Emerson plays at Wheaton College at the same time.
