WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey hung close with No. 17 Endicott College, giving its ranked foe trouble before finally falling 2-1 in overtime at Butler Stadium on Wednesday evening.Â
After a riveting 60 minutes ended 1-1, the Gulls (11-3) put the game away 6:20 into the overtime period. Junior Riley Perkins (Lakeville, Mass.) stepped just inside the circle and ripped a shot that connected with the back of the cage to end the game.
Earlier on, Endicott took the initial lead with just over a minute remaining in the first period. A pass from junior Elena Govoni (Walpole, Mass.) set up grad student Abby Antonelli (Worcester, Mass.) to bury a shot to grab a 1-0 lead.
With 1:45 left in the opening half, sophomore Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) responded with a first career goal for the Blue (3-10). A picture perfect cross from junior Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) gave Wysong a clear look at the right side of the cage, where a redirected shot found its mark.
The Gulls nearly scored at the tail end of the third period, with the clock expiring mere seconds before a scramble led to a ball going into the cage.
Junior Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) had a strong showing for Wellesley with eight saves recorded. Endicott goalie Faith Minickene (Madison, Conn.) made six stops for the Gulls.Â
Both teams next play on Saturday, October 17. The Blue travel to Smith college for a NEWMAC rivalry game at 3:00 PM. The Gulls play a 1:00 PM game at Roger Williams University.
