WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College soccer earned a huge 2-0 NEWMAC shutout of Babson College on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue (6-6-5 Overall, 3-3-4 NEWMAC) beat the Beavers (6-8-4 Overall, 3-3-4 NEWMAC) for the first time since 2016, giving Coach Greg Margolis' squad three key points ahead of the last game of the regular season.
Blue sophomore Olivia Lore (Blue Bell, Pa.) tied a career-high with 11 saves and now sits at 10th in program history for saves in a single-season with 121. Lore also earned a seventh clean sheet of the year.
Wellesley made the most of a penalty kick opportunity in the 14th minute. Senior Mae Nephew (Duluth, Minn.) was fouled inside the box, leading to the stoppage. Nephew went low left on the penalty shot as the goalie could only watch the ball cross the line into the net.
Babson had a chance to even the game in the 55th minute with a penalty kick of its own. Sophomore Lindsey Cassidy (Westfield, Ind.) took the attempt and aimed lower left. However, Lore dove in the perfect spot to make the save and keep the Beavers off of the scoreboard.Â
First-year Maya Fraser nearly added a second goal in the 70th minute, curling a shot high right that Babson's keeper narrowly tipped out of the goal's way.
The Blue finally scored its second goal at the 77:20 mark. Senior Olivia Chow-Gillette (Dallas, Texas) took a deep ball and navigated past a defender before kicking it in the lower right corner.
Babson senior Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made four stops.
Each team competes in a NEWMAC regular season finale on Saturday, October 31. The Blue will head to Mount Holyoke College for a 1:00 PM showdown. The Beavers will play at that same time at Emerson College.
