Blue Tennis Defeats Endicott; Competes at ITA Regionals

BEVERLY, Mass. and BRUNSWICK, Maine – Wellesley College tennis improved to 3-0 with a 4-1 win at Endicott College on Friday. Certain team members were competing at the ITA Regionals, hosted by Bowdoin College.

The Blue and the Gulls (5-1) played singles first, with one match getting suspended due to rain. Doubles did not happen due to the weather.

First-year Kakou Narita (Tokyo, Japan) didn't drop a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 performance against junior Caroline Sutliffe (Duxbury, Mass.) at No. 4 singles.

At No. 2 singles, senior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) made quick work of sophomore Nadia Uzelac (Waltham, Mass.), 6-0, 6-1.

Endicott earned its lone point at No. 5 singles, with first-year Sophia Eicke (Berlin, Germany) winning 6-1, 6-4 over Wellesley senior Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.)

The Blue returned fire with the same 6-1, 6-4 scoreline at No. 3 singles. First-year Sophia Liang (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was the victor over junior Emily Leclerc (Manchester, N.H.).

Blue senior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) won the fourth point at the No. 6 singles spot. Khera held off senior Amber Woods (Scarborough, Maine), 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(4).

The No. 1 singles match between Wellesley sophomore Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) and Endicott sophomore Gabby Muzzeo (Bethel, Conn.) was halted due to rain. At the time, Hayes led 7-6(3), 5-5.

ITA Regionals

In the "A" singles draw, senior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) recorded a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel over Emerson College sophomore Teah Login (Huntington, N.Y.) in the Round of 64. In the Round of 32, Xu fell 7-5, 6-1 to MIT's Rayna Li (Dallas, Texas).

Junior Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) also saw success, with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(8) win versus Williams College sophomore Ayanna Varma (Livingston, N.J.). Buttorff was bested in the Round of 32 by Babson's Elizabeth Shu (Sugar Land, Texas).

Sophomore Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) narrowly fell 6-7(1), 6-2,1-0(7) to Colby College junior Ella Novion (Lenexa, Kan.) in the Round of 64. 

Junior Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) fell 8-5 to Bates College first-year Francesca Rodriguez (Lima, Peru) in the "B" singles draw.

In doubles, Xu and Bian had a bye into the Round of 32. The duo fell to Amherst College sophomore Maya Muhunthan (Acton, Mass.) and first-year Gabrielle Shiao (Los Angeles, Calif.), 9-7. Buttorff and Patel won 8-3 in the Round of 64 over UMass Boston senior Zainab Patel (Ahmedabad, India) and junior Tatiana Malone (South Dennis, Mass.). The duo then lost in the Round 32, 8-6, to Williams seniors Ahn Lin (New York, N.Y.) and Julia Zhang (Bellevue, Wash.).
