WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey defeated MIT for the first time since 2018 in its NEWMAC regular season finale at Butler Stadium on Saturday. The Blue (7-10 Overall, 6-3 NEWMAC) ride into the playoffs on a four-game winning streak.
The Engineers (12-6 Overall, 8-1 NEWMAC) have locked up the top seed in the NEWMAC while the Blue sit at No. 3. Both teams will await the NEWMAC Field Hockey Playoff draw to learn about their next respective matchups.
The lone goal of the game came 3:39 into the third quarter. Blue junior Gabi Chen (Mountain View, Calif.) drove into the circle, through a defender and took a shot that hit off a defender's stick and into the cage. The score was Chen's fourth of the season, tied for the team lead.
Junior keeper Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) had a standout showing. The Blue keeper stopped all seven shots on goal, and while MIT attempted 13 penalty corners, Simmonds and the defense prevented any from turning into goals.
Sophomore Alexia Ninios (London, England) made a trio of saves for Tech.
