Softball Defeats Wisconsin-River Falls, SUNY Brockport at THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – Wellesley College softball picked up a pair of wins over University of Wisconsin-River Falls and SUNY Brockport on Thursday during THE Spring Games at Diamond Plex fields. The Blue now sit at 4-1 after a very successful start to the season.

Game 1 | Wellesley 7, Wis.-River Falls 2 | Final

Junior Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) was a home-run shy of the cycle with two RBIs and three hits against the Falcons (4-10). Not satisfied with only hitting, Colgan threw five scoreless innings of relief with x strikeouts and earned the win.

Sophomore Bella Hassett (North Granby, Conn.) started the game for Wellesley, throwing 2+ innings of two-run ball (one earned), with a k.

The Blue started off on the right foot with a run in the top of the first. Singles by juniors Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) and Colgan put Mulhern on third. First-year Brooklyn Awad (Montclair, N.J.) brought Mulhern in with a sacrifice fly to right.

Wellesley added a second tally in the upper half of the second frame. With senior Emeline Gaunce (Palo Alto, Calif.) in scoring position, classmate Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) slapped a single to center that sent Gaunce home to make it 2-0 for the Blue.

The Falcons struck back with a pair of runs to even up the game in the bottom of the third. A throwing miscue following a steal of third caused first-year Ella Stuber (Shawno, Wis.) to score. Later in the inning, first-year Addison Eaton (Minnetrista, Minn.) came across on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Lacy Lilyquist (Hudson, Wis.).

A two-out rally turned in four runs for Wellesley in the fourth, putting the team ahead 6-2. With runners on first and second, Delgado hit a ball to shortstop that was misplayed, plating junior Giana Jones (Fairfield, Calif.). Subsequently, Mulhern placed a two-run single up the middle to score Delgado and first-year Sophia Fredericks (Chicago, Ill.). Mulhern came in for the final run on an RBI double to left center from Colgan.

Mulhern and Colgan used the bats again to add a run to the total for Wellesley in the top of the sixth. A Mulhern double to left center was followed immediately by a Colgan triple to the exact same location.

River Falls first-year Lucy Knutson (Princeton, Minn.) tossed 3.2 innings of six (two earned), and fanned two. Junior Brooklyn Vangruensven (Suamico, Wis.) limited the Blue to one run in the latter 3.1 innings and struck out three.

Game 2 | Wellesley 5, SUNY Brockport 3 | Final

Blue junior Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) pitched 6.1 scoreless innings for the win, with only one hit and three walks allowed. Wicked struck out a dozen, tying the highest of her career. First-year Lauren Seyller (South Elgin, Ill.) came in to pitch the seventh, giving up three over .2 innings. Wicker came back in for the final out.

After a scoreless first two and a half innings, the Blue put the offense together with a run. A Natalie Nicol (Crockett, Texas) RBI single up the middle brought in Delgado from second base.

The bottom of fourth was another fruitful one for Wellesley, with three more runs being tacked on. After junior Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) reached on an error, first-year Jailey Polski (Boise, Idaho) brought her all the way home with a crushed double in the left center gap. From there, Mulhern brought in Polski with another hit to center, a second hit of the game. Awad added the final RBI with a single to short center that allowed Delgado to come in.

Wellesley's final run came in the latter half of the sixth. Senior Milo Abernethy (Phoenix, Ariz.) made the most of a pinch hit opportunity, singled up the middle to get Nicol home and up the Blue's lead to five.

Brockport did not go down quietly. Down 5-0 in the seventh, the Golden Eagles got juniors Saylor Ayers (Apalachin, N.Y.) and Maeve Brannigan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) on base. First-year Emily Harrington (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) launched a three-run homer out to left field, cutting the score to 5-3.

Sophomore Colleen Davis (Adams Center, N.Y.) went 3.1 innings for the Golden Eagles (2-4), allowing six hits and a walk with four runs (two earned). Junior Hadley Alguire (Canton, N.Y.) threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing a single run.

Tomorrow the team will wrap up Spring Break with games against Macalester College (9:00 AM) and Eastern Connecticut State (11:30 AM).
