Simic Scores Seven in Blue Lacrosse's 15-12 NEWMAC Win over Emerson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse first-year Milica Simic (Park Ridge, Ill.) recorded 10 points (seven goals, three assists) to give the Blue a 15-12 NEWMAC win over Emerson College at Butler Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue improved to 3-4 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC with the performance. Simic also led the unit with five draw controls. Sophomore Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) and first-year Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) both had hat-tricks. First-year Suhani Khandelwal (Carlisle, Mass.) led the team with four ground balls. First-year Scarlett McArthur (Toronto, Ontario) earned the win with six saves while senior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) stopped three saves.

The Lions (4-5 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC) were led by seven points (five goals, two assists) and nine draw controls by junior Ava DelliCompagni (Coatesville, Pa.). Sophomore Laina Gustafson (Cross Plains, Wis.) added three goals, an assist and six draw controls. Keeper Ellie Spotts (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) hit double-digits with 10 saves in goal.

The Lions went up 4-1 in the opening period with DelliCompagni, Gustafson and sophomore Adele Eaton (King of Prussia, Pa.) scoring. A last-minute goal for Wellesley from sophomore Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) made it 4-2 Emerson after a quarter.

The teams alternated goals early in the second with Emerson up 6-4 at the 9:50 mark of the second quarter. From there, Wellesley gathered momentum scoring the final four goals of the half. Simic, Wysong, Petersen-Kopman and senior Ella Kim (Bellevue, Wash.) all found homes for their shots.

The Blue didn't let Emerson back within two in a 5-3 quarter that gave the hosts a 13-9 advantage. Simic was instrumental with four goals while Dellicompagni and sophomore Laura Lovell (Norwalk, Conn.) tried to keep the Lions within striking distance.

Goals from Simic and Petersen-Kopman put Wellesley up 15-9 with 12:18 left in the game. While a 3-0 Emerson run over the next three minutes put the Blue's lead in danger, Emerson never scored again.

The Lions led the Blue in total shots, 33-27. Emerson won 18-of-29 draws while the Blue converted on 4-of-5 free position shots.

Each team plays a conference match away from home on Wednesday, March 25. The Blue face off with No. 14/24 Babson College at 4:00 PM. The Lions take on Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 PM.
