Tennis Perfect in 7-0 NEWMAC Match with Springfield

WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 30 Wellesley College tennis looked sharp in a 7-0 NEWMAC sweep of Springfield College on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

The Blue (6-3 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC) won all three doubles' lines with matching 6-3 scores over the Pride (4-4 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC).

Junior Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won first at No. 3 doubles against senior Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) and sophomore Ava Shea (Belchertown, Mass.).

At 1 doubles, senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) picked up the victory against juniors Kapom Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand) and Natalia Peyón (Discovery Bay, Hong Kong).

Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) completed the sweep at No. 2, taking down senior Alysa Elliot (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) and first-year Erica Jud (Glen Head, N.Y.).

Bian and junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) pushed Wellesley's lead to 3-0 with twin 6-1, 6-0 performances. Bian was triumphant against Elliot at No. 3 while Khera pushed past Peyón at No. 5.

At the top line, Xu and Vettayawaikoon duked it out in an evenly matched contest. Springfield opened with a 6-2 first set before Xu flipped the script, winning the second 6-2. Xu surged in the third set, completing the comeback with a 6-2 final set.

Junior Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) won all but a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win over sophomore Grace Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) at No. 6.

At No. 2, sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) won a pair of 6-3 sets to grab the point against Jud.

Sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) finished the sweep by defeating McGoldrick, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4.

Wellesley remains at home next Friday, April 3 against No. 9 MIT at 4:00 PM. Springfield hosts Clark University in conference play at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 4.
