BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse rolled through Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a spotless 17-0 showing at Clean Harbors Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The shutout marked the first for the Blue (2-1) since 1990.
Senior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) stopped all three shots on goal during sixty minutes of action. First-year Milica Simic (Park Ridge, Ill.) followed up last Saturday's six-goal outing with seven more goals, an assist and six draw controls. Sophomore Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored on six occasions, forced four turnovers and snatched up five ground balls. First-year Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.) matched Simic with six draw controls.
Wellesley outshot Mass. Maritime 37-4. The Blue won 15-of-19 draw controls and converted on 4-of-6 free position shots.
Junior Christiane Rech (Cheshire, Mass.) saved 12 shots on goal for the Buccaneers (0-1).
A low scoring first quarter saw just two total goals, one from Simic and one from . Sophomore Merin Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) added an assist.
Petersen-Kopman, first-year Fran Primoli (Stillwater, Minn.), Simic and senior Ella Kim (Bellevue, Wash.) teamed up for eight total goals in the second quarter, giving Wellesley a 10-0 advantage at halftime. Wysong and Petersen-Kopman each assisted on a goal.
Simic played a role in all three third quarter goals; scoring twice and aided Peterson-Kopman's tally. Shell supplied a second assist of the contest.
Shell found a goal and a third assist in a four-goal fourth frame. Petersen-Kopman connected on two shots and Simic added a seventh goal of the game for good measure.
Up next, Wellesley will welcome University of Hartford to Butler Stadium for a 4:00 PM game on Tuesday, March 10. Mass. Maritime travels to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, March 11 for a 6:00 PM showdown.
