WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College lacrosse saw seven goals from sophomore Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) but lost a close 16-12 contest to NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at Butler Stadium on Wednesday.
The Lyons (7-6 Overall, 2-6 NEWMAC) were led by 11 total points (seven goals, four assists) from senior Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.). Sophomore Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) supplied five goals and an assist while winning 11 draw controls and six ground balls. Sophomore Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) stopped nine shots.
In addition to Petersen-Kopman's goals, the Blue (4-10 Overall, 2-7 NEWMAC) saw two goals and four assists from first-year Milica Simic (Park Ridge, Ill.). Senior Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) made a dozen saves in net.
Wellesley got off to a hot start in the first scoring four times in the opening 5:31 of the contest. Simic put the first one on the scoreboard and was followed by a pair from Petersen-Kopman. Kyoka Akiyama (Tokyo, Japan) put the Blue in front by four with the first goal of the season for the sophomore. Senior Marielle Welch (Silver Spring, Md.) answered the run for Mount Holyoke off a feed from Bisson. Petersen-Kopman responded to record a hat trick and give Wellesley a 4-goal advantage once again. Less than 40 seconds later, Spaulding cut the deficit to 5-2 to close out the first.Â
Mount Holyoke outscored the Blue 3-0 in the second quarter to even the game at 5-5 heading into halftime. Bisson pulled the Lyons to within 5-3 midway through the frame, before the visitors received goals from Spaulding and sophomore Helena Robinson (Gales Ferry, Conn.) in the final five minutes to tie the game.Â
The Lyons carried the momentum into the third with three more goals by Spaulding, Bisson and Robinson, including a pair of player-up goals, to complete a 7-0 run going back to the end of the first. Wellesley halted the run with Simic's second tally of the contest with 8:48 to play in the quarter. Spaulding tacked on another player advantage goal with about six minutes in the quarter to take a 9-6 lead. Petersen-Kopman and Spaulding then traded goals for a 10-7 score in favor of the visitors. Robinson notched a hat trick for the Lyons for an 11-7 advantage after 45 minutes.Â
Bisson scored twice to open the scoring in the fourth for a 13-7 Lyons lead, their largest of the game. Wellesley rallied to cut the deficit in half with three goals in a 46-second span with two by Petersen-Kopman and another by first-year Eliza Wysong (Kansas City, Mo.). The Lyons stopped the run behind three more goals by Bisson in the final 7:33. Wysong and Petersen-Kopman both scored for the Blue during the stretch, though the team was unable to get back within three.
The Blue will conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 18 at Springfield College at 12:00 PM. The Lyons play that same day at 1:00 PM at Babson College.
