WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 3 seed Wellesley College tennis defeated No. 6 seed Wheaton College, 4-0, in the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship First Round on Tuesday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.
The Blue (13-5) now advances to play No. 2 seed Babson College on Saturday, May 2 at 12:00 PM. The Lyons ended the season with a 9-11 record.
No. 2 and 3 doubles both picked up 6-1 wins to collect the point for Wellesley. Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) won at No. 2 against junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda).
At No. 3, Blue sophomores Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned the win over junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first-year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.).
No. 1 doubles featured Wellesley senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) versus Wheaton seniors Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). When the doubles decision was reached, Wellesley led 4-3 in the set.
Patel continued her success in singles, winning a straight-sets 6-0, 6-2 match at No. 3 over Ortiz.
Bian ran the match score up to 3-0 at No. 4 singles. The first-year had a spotless 6-0 first set before taking a 6-3 second from Hollis.
Junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) clinched the match at No. 6 singles, matching the 6-0, 6-3 performance against Robinson.
When the match finished, Xu had just won the first set, 7-5, over Greenlee at No. 1. At No. 2, sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) was up 6-4, 3-0 against Haraj-Sai.Â
Sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) came within one game of victory at No. 5, recording a 6-4, 5-1 scoreline versus Wilson.
