WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey was edged by the University of Southern Maine, 1-0, at Butler Stadium on Tuesday night.
The lone goal of the contest came in the early stages of the third quarter when Southern Maine (4-1) senior Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine) sent a long pass from well outside of the right of the circle into the middle of the action to senior Bri Townsend (Newport, Maine). Townsend controlled the ball and scored into the right side of the cage for the 1-0 lead.Â
Each team had several great scoring chances throughout the game, but both goalies played well for their respective teams. First-year Haylee Romasco (Newport, Maine) made four saves to improve to 3-0 on the year for the Huskies, while junior Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) kept the Blue (1-4) in the game with five saves.Â
Junior Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) led Wellesley with a pair of shots on goal.Â
In a very even contest, the Huskies held a slight edge in penalty corners (11-9) and shots (11-9).Â
Wellesley starts NEWMAC play down the road at Babson College on Saturday, September 19. On Friday, September 18, Southern Maine will welcome Husson University.
