WELLESLEY, Mass. – Two fourth quarter goals led Wheaton College past Wellesley College field hockey, 2-0, in a NEWMAC contest at Butler Stadium on Friday evening.
After three scoreless quarters, sophomore Katie Sirois (Greene, Maine) grabbed a rebound off of a shot from junior Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.) and fired in a tie-breaking goal for the Lyons (4-4 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC).
After holding off the Blue (1-7 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC) for most of the fourth, Wheaton found a second goal with under a minute remaining to put the game on ice. Wilonski drove in through multiple defenders and scored a team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Wellesley outshot Wheaton, 19-12 in the game. The Blue were led by junior Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas), putting up eight shots, with six on goal. Sophomore Gabi Chen (Mountain View, Calif.) had a close chance for Wellesley, with a shot that got past Wheaton's keeper. However, defender Carys Mitchell (Holderness, N.H.) recorded the defensive save to keep the visitors' clean sheet intact.
Junior netminder Elise LeBlanc (Hampstead, N.H.) had a career-high 13 saves in the scoreless effort for the Lyons. Junior Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) protected five shots on goal for the Blue.
Next up, the Blue will host No. 21 Bates College for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day on Wednesday, September 30 at 6:00 PM. The Lyons take on NEWMAC foe WPI at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 29.
