CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 5 MIT picked up a 5-0 NEWMAC win over Wellesley College at Roberts Field on Wednesday.
Just over 12 minutes into the contest, the Engineers (8-0-1 Overall, 2-0-0 NEWMAC) got the offense going with a goal. A touch from sophomore Andrea Cummings (Seattle, Wash.) gave senior Ayla Sumer (Dallas, Texas) a look at the goal. Sumer kept the ball low on a kick in the bottom left corner past the outstretched hands of Lore.
Sumer doubled the lead in the 25th minute, connecting on a third goal of the season.
With just under 90 seconds remaining in the first half, MIT upped the advantage to 3-0. First-year Claire Zhang (Charlotte, N.C.) delivered the damage, scoring a team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The Engineers' fourth goal came five minutes into the second half. Senior Madelyn Popilek (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) earned a penalty kick and converted on the opportunity.
Zhang scored the fifth and final goal for MIT in the 78th minute.
Sophomore Olivia Lore (Blue Bell, Pa.) made nine saves for the Blue (3-4-2 Overall, 0-1-1 NEWMAC). First-year Maya Fraser (Leverett, Mass.) put up the lone shot on goal for Wellesley.
Engineers junior Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) played scoreless first 45 minutes in goal while senior Cassidy Jennings (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had one stop in the second half.
Both teams next play a NEWMAC contest on Saturday, October 3. Wellesley plays at Smith College at 12:00 PM while MIT hosts Coast Guard Academy at 4:30 PM.
