In the opener, Wellesley (10-4, 2-2) scored an unearned run in
the top of the first before Coast Guard got two in the home half on
a two-run homer by senior Courtney Wolf. The Bears broke the game
open in the third with four runs. Junior Amanda Frederick had an
RBI single, freshman Holli Bastinck added a two-run single before
senior Carin Sweeney followed with an RBI groundout for a 6-1 lead.
Frederick, Wolf and Sweeney all had RBI single in the fifth to end
the game due to the eight-run rule.
In the circle, Sophomore Hayley Feindel allowed just two hits and
an unearned run while striking out nine to lead Coast Guard. For
Wellesley, first-year Lauren Goldfarb (5-2) allowed nine hits and
seven earned runs to take the loss in game one.
In the nightcap, Wellesley snapped the Bears 20-game NEWMAC
unbeaten streak with an 8-2 win in game two behind the pitching of
first-year Sarah Schwartzmeyer. The rookie allowed just two
hits and an earned run while striking out twelve. The conference
loss was the Bears first since April 19, 2008 at Smith. Coast Guard
was 15-0-1 last season with Wellesley tying the Bears.
Wellesley junior Brittany Bakacs had three hits and four
RBI's to back the pitching of Schwartzmeyer. Backacs had an
RBI single in the first as Wellesley plated a pair of unearned runs
for a 2-0 lead. The Blue added three more in the second with Bakacs
delivering the key hit, a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.
Bakacs had an RBI single in the fourth and first-year Mara Blesoff
drew a bases loaded walk for a 7-0 lead. Goldfarb then blasted a
solo homer in the fifth for an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Jessie Haladyna
had a pair of hits and scored three runs for Wellesley in the game
two win.
Wellesley sets its season record to 10-4 (2-2 NEWMAC), while Coast
Guard is 12-4 (3-1 NEWMAC).
The Blue are back in action on Wednesday hosting Wheaton College
in their 3:00pm home opener.
