The sweep sets Wellesley's final NEWMAC record to 11-5 (25-7
overall), giving the Blue the number-four seed in the upcoming
NEWMAC tournament, hosted by Coast Guard. Smith ends the season
0-16 in the conference, 2-25 overall.
Wellesley's bats were quiet in game one, as the Blue fell behind
2-0 by the fourth inning. The Blue got one back in the bottom of
the fouth as Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL) singled
home Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA) to cut the lead to
2-1.
Wellesley then plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to
take a 3-2 lead which they would hold for good. Megan
Townsend (Saline, MI) led off the inning with a single and
later scored on a Smith error. The go-ahead run came off the bat
off Brittany Bakacs (Millstone Township, NJ) who
drove in Orloff with a single.
The Blue offense totaled eight hits in game one, led by Wood and
Bakacs who each went 2-3 with an RBI.
Wood also earned the win in a five-inning start. She allowed two
runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking none.
Sarah Schwartzmeyer (Elba, NY) came on in relief
to earn the save, throwing two innings, allowing only one hit with
two strikeouts.
Wellesley's bats came alive in game two, as the Blue scored 11
runs in the mercy-rule shortened game. The team got a huge boost
from the four through seven spots in the line-up, as Wood,
Mara Blesoff (Oak Park, IL), Alex
Warren (Delta, BC) and Samantha Spiga
(Perth Amboy, NJ), combined to go 7-9 with 10 runs batted in.
Individually, Spiga hit her second homerun of the season while Wood
added three RBI.
In the circle, Lauren Goldfarb (Albuquerque,
NM) picked up the five-inning win. The first-year did not allow a
run, scattering four hits, while striking out five batters with no
walks.
Wellesley now looks ahead to the 2010 NEWMAC Tournament hosted
by top-seeded, Coast Guard. The Blue will first square off against
#5 Clark on Wednesday at 2:30pm. The winner advances to play the
host Bears. All qualifed teams advance to this weekend's games,
also at Coast Guard.
