WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Led by tournament MVP, Devon Shatkin, the
St. Lawrence women's soccer team posted a 2-0 win to take the title
of the Wellesley Soccer Invitational over the host Blue. The win
lifts the Saints to a 4-1 record, while Wellesley falls to 3-2.
Shatkin anchored the Saints defense that allowed just 10 total
shots in the tournament. St. Lawrence held Simmons to two shots in
a 5-0 win in the opening round, and today versus Wellesley they
limited the Blue to eight attempts.
St. Lawrence opened scoring as Brooke Hessney converted a
rebound off an indirect kick. Katharine Polido collected the assist
on the goal, which was scored 28:49 into play. The lead remained
1-0 until Betsy Lucas scored off a deflection from Stephanie
Sayward to give the Saints an insurance goal with 3:46 left in the
game.
The Saints held a 15-8 shot advantage over Wellesley 15-8 on the
afternoon. Blue netminder Sarah
Gray recorded eight saves while Abby van Geldern
tallied four saves in the shutout.
After playing five games in the last eight days, the Blue will
take a well-deserved week off, returning to action at home on
Saturday at 1:00pm. St. Lawrence also plays on Saturday, traveling
