WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wesleyan University sophomore Averill
Roberto recorded a goal and an assist to lead the visiting
Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over Wellesley College in non-conference
field hockey action on Wednesday. With the win, Wesleyan
remains a perfect 5-0 this season. The loss, their
fourth-straight, drops the Blue to 2-4 overall.
Wesleyan opened up scoring in the first period, as Liz Chabot
deflected a Roberto shot into the left side of the net for a 1-0
lead. The Cardinals increased their advantage to 2-0 in the
27th minute of play when Amber Bruckner tipped in a Morgan McCauley
attempt after a wild scramble in front of the net.
Wellesley had a chance to get on the board early in the second
half when senior Sally
Scudder had a one-on-one opportunity in front of
the net, but her attempt went just wide of the cage.
Wesleyan then tacked on an insurance goal, as Roberto scored
unassisted after a spin move past a Blue defender to put the
Cardinals ahead 3-0.
Wesleyan held a 28-12 advantage in shots, including outshooting
the Blue 16-2 in the first period. The Cardinal also held a
significant margin in penalty corners, outdrawing Wellesley 19=3 in
the category.
Wellesley was kept in the game with strong play from
keeper Sarina
Sawyer who made 13 stops in the game.
Wesleyan's Tori Redding was solid between the pipes earning
the shutout with six saves.
Both teams return to conference play on Saturday, September
25th. Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke in a 12:00pm NEWMAC
macth-up, while Wesleyan returns to the area to take on
NESCAC-rival Tufts, also at 12:00pm.
