Late Rally Falls Short as Blue Field Hockey Falls at Conn.

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Wellesley College field hockey team mounted a late rally, but couldn't overcome two first half goals, as the Blue dropped a tight 2-1 contest on the road at Connecticut College on Wednesday evening.

Down 2-0 at the half, Wellesley piled up 15 corners in the second stanza but only broke through with a 51st minute goal from first-year Nathalie Gruet, who scored on a deflection from Meghan Peterson. Gruet's score cut the deficit to 2-1.

Peterson nearly tallied the game tying goal in the final ten minutes of play, however, Conn. keeper Becca Napolitano thwarted the scoring chance when she went down to the turf to make a diving stab to preserve the victory for the Camels.

For Conn., Lauren Gaffny scored a first half goal and assisted on another to lead the offensive charge. Brittany Fitzgerald also chipped in, with her team-leading ninth goal of the season for the Camels.

The Camels even their record at 5-5 with the win, while Wellesley slips to 6-7 with the setback.

In goal for the hosts, Napolitano finished with four saves and was aided by Andrea Hoisington, who contributed a defensive save. In goal for the Blue, Brit Mscisz made two saves.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Smith for a 1:00pm NEWMAC match-up.
