WELLESLEY, Mass. – For the second year in a row, the Williams College Ephs were crowned team champions at Wellesley's Ann S. Batchelder Invitational. The event, held at the par-72, 5,860-yard Nehoiden Golf Course, featured 35 golfers from seven institutions.
Williams turned in team scores of 322 on both days of the event, as their total of 644 nabbed the title by 31 strokes over runner-up Amherst (334-341--675). Vassar made a push on day two, but ended seven strokes behind Amherst, finishing third with a 682 (344-338).
Merrimack took fourth overall, recording the second lowest day two score (337) to finish with a 690 overall. Host Wellesley took fifth place, with a team score of 739 (371-368), while Mount Holyoke rounded out the field with a score of 773 (376-397).
Individually, sophomore Georgiana Salant of Williams took home medalist honors, carding rounds of 73 and 77 to finish at the top of the field. Mount Holyoke first-year Madi Mendiola finished second with a 154 (76-78), while Amherst senior Elaine Lin took third with a 156 total (78-78).
Wellesley was led by first-year Alexandria Lee, who took 14th overall with rounds of 86 and 87. Sophomore Alexandra Fuiks shot rounds of 90 and 89 to finish tied for 16th, while junior Michelle Cho took 21st with scores of 90 and 91.
This weekend's tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Blue golfers.
Ann S. Batchelder was a Wellesley faculty member for 38 years, teaching physical education and also serving as one of the school's varsity squash coaches. She retired in spring of 2009, establishing a charitable gift annuity for the Friends of Wellesley College Athletics. Her generosity created one of the largest gifts from a member of the College's academic community and will benefit Wellesley student-athletes for years to come.
