Blue Swimming & Diving Falls to Defending NEWMAC Champion MIT

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The visiting MIT swimming and diving team handed Wellesley it's first dual meet loss of the season, as the defending NEWMAC Champion Engineers posted a 187-113 win over the Blue on Wednesday evening in Chandler Pool. MIT opens their dual meet season with a 1-0 mark, while Wellesley dips to 2-1. 

MIT took home 10 event wins, while Wellesley won six events. The Engineers picked up a sweep of the relays, but the Blue came out on top in both diving events. 

Individually for MIT, juniors Anna Kokensparger and Elina Hu, sophomore Katelyn Rossick, and first-year Eann Tuan all posted two wins in the meet. Kokensparger touched first in the 200 IM (2:10.38) and the 200-fly (2:09.31), while Rossick picked up wins in the 200-free (200.40) and the 200-back (2:12.32). Hu and Tuan touched the wall in a dead heat in the 100-free (55.24), tying for top honors, while Tuan won the 100-back (1:00.73) and Hu was the 50-free winner (25.18). 

For Wellesley, first-year Kendra Waters swept the breastroke events, winning the 100-breast in 1:10.18 and taking the 200-breast in 2:34.21. Sophomore Keelin Nave took top honors in the 500-free, recording a time of 5:17.98, while also touching second in the 200-fly in 2:12.22. Junior Virginia Hung notched a win in the 100-fly while taking third in the 200-fly in 1:02.53.

Other swimming highlights for the Blue, included a second place finish from senior Stephanie Welch, recordeding a lifetime best time of 5:29.59. Senior Olivia Hulme also recorded a second place finish at the meet, recording a time of 1:04.06 in the 100-fly. Wrapping up the swimming for the Blue, first-year Veronica Lin added a pair of third place performances in the 100-back (1:03.88) and the 200-back (2:16.63). 

In the relay events, MIT touched first in the 200-medley, as Tuan, Calley Murphy, Kokensparger and Hu recorded a time of 1:49.72, while in the 200-free relay, Murphy, Michelle Cunningham, Tuan and Hu, finished first in 1:40.85. Highlighting the relay events for Wellesley, Lin, Waters, Nave and first-year Monica Gates finished second in the 200-medley in 1:55.27. 

At the diving end of the pool, Wellesley sophomore Hayley Goydan swept both boards, recording a score of 279.52 on the 1-meter and a 262.49 on the 3-meter. Her 1-meter score surpassed NCAA qualifying standards, while her 3-meter score was under three points from qualifying. MIT's Elise Stave and Mia Stevens took second and third in both events, with Stave recording scores of 233.17 (1-meter) and 257.40 (3-meter), and Stevens posting scores of 232.42 (1-meter) and 228.82 (3-meter). Rounding out the diving highlights, Wellesley's Gabby Cooper-Vespa took fourth place on both boards, scoring a 216.59 on the 1-meter and a 212.10 on the 3-meter. 

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday at 1:00pm, traveling to Simmons for a dual meet. MIT is back in the water at Bowdoin on Saturday at 1:00pm.
