WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Visiting Tufts edged the Wellesley College swimming and diving team 180-119 on Tuesday evening at Wellesley's Chandler Pool. The Jumbos improve their dual meet record to 3-1, while the Blue move to 3-2 on the season.
The Jumbos touched first in nine events, while Wellesley recorded seven event wins.
Six different swimmers picked up event wins to lead Tufts. The Jumbos touched first in all five freestyle events, led by senior Courtney Adams, who picked up wins in both the 50-free (25.48) and the 100-free (55.41). Senior Valerie Eacret won the 200-free in 2:00.62, classmate Katie Russell took the 500-free (5:24.92), while junior Christine Garvey won the 1000-free (10:57.60). Other individual event winners for Tufts included junior Paulina Ziolek in the 200-breast (2:33.72) and first-year Scarlett Hao in the 200 IM (2:18.14).
The Jumbos also picked up victories in both relay events. In the 200-medley, the team of junior KJ Kroetch, sophomores Ellen Gage and Mia Greenwald, and first-year Sam Sliwinski, touched the wall first, recording a time of 1:53.47. In the 200-free relay, Adams, Ziolek, Sliwinski and first-year Kathryn Coniglio, posted a winning time of 1:41.54.
For Wellesley, sophomore Keelin Nave and first-year Veronica Lin each picked up two wins. Nave won the 100-fly in 2:11.60, while taking the 200-fly in 59.85. Lin and classmate Tiffany Chen went 1-2 in both the 100-back and the 200-back, as Lin recorded times of 1:03.36 (100) and 2:16.17 (200), and Chen went 1:03.99 (100) and 2:17.84 (200).
Rounding out the swimming wins for Wellesley, first-year Kendra Waters won the 100-breast in a time of 1:10.93. She also touched the wall second in the 200-breast in a time of 2:35.06.
Also swimming strong for Wellesley, senior Melanie Kaplan closed out her collegiate career with a 2nd place finish in the 1,000-free (10:58.46) and a third place touch in the 500-free (5:27.62). Classmate Stephanie Welch recorded a lifetime best in the 200-back, recording a time of 2:19.88, while junior Virginia Hung recorded a third place finish in the 200fly in 2:18.20.
At the diving end of the pool, Wellesley's Hayley Goydan continued her fantastic season with a sweep of the diving events. The sophomore recorded an NCAA qualifying score of 286.72 on the 3-meter board, while winning the 1-meter event with a score of 281.32. Tufts' Sami Bloom took second in both events, recording a 268.87 on the 1-meter, with a 271.50 on the 3-meter.
Wellesley next competes at the Pioneer Valley Invitational, hosted by Mount Holyoke on Saturday. Tufts is back in action on Friday, competing at the two-day MIT Invitational.
